The Spread:
Almond Beach Village courts families with all-inclusive prices, lots of activities, and a complimentary kids club. Located on the west coast of Barbados, about 30 minutes from the capital of Bridgetown and 45 minutes from the international airport, the original resort as well as the newer Almond Casuarina Beach Resort cater to families as well as couples.
Almond Beach Village keeps the calm between families and other guests with separate lodging areas and pools. With 32 acres, ten pools, and nearly a mile of sandy beach, theres plenty of room for both groups. The hotel, once part of an 18th-century sugar plantation, uses its historic stone sugar mill tower for wedding ceremonies.
Why Families Love It:
Theres plenty to do here with and without your kids. Complimentary activities for adults and children include sailing, snorkeling, waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking, and a nine-hole par-three golf course (modest fee for clubs). The colorful and spacious kids center is air-conditioned; children congregate in the three family pools just outside the facility. Both the nursery, caring for infants up to 24 months old, and the Mini Kids Club, catering to ages two to four, are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Kids Club, targeted to ages four to 12, and the Teen Center, geared to ages 13 and older, are open daily 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Depending on age, kids go on nature walks, try face painting, play cricket, take tennis and golf clinics, join cooking classes, or learn Calypso and Reggae dancing, island style. Teens also mingle during disco nights, banana-boat rides, beach volleyball, and movies.
While the meals include island fare, children wanting the familiar will find hot dogs and French fries among the choices. Babysitting is available for a fee.
Special Events & Activities:
Although Bajan fare appears on all dining menus, the tastiest local treats are those served at the intimate Enids Restaurant. Make reservations so you can sample the fish stew, macaroni pie, and fantastic fried chicken.
