May 15, 2002 French daredevil Eric Barone, was hospitalized briefly on Monday with a sore shoulder and burnt hands after a successful attempt to break his mountain-bike land speed record on soil ended in a spectacular wreck.
The accident occurred as Barone, aka the Red Baron, was rocketing down the side of Cerro Negro, a 2,214-foot active volcano northwest of Managua, Nicaragua. Barone, who reached a record 107 mph during the attempt, reportedly flew several hundred feet before slamming into the earth and coming to rest in a crater. His bike bore the brunt of the force, cracking in
half.
His previous land speed record, also set at Cerro Negro, was 101 mph.
According to The Express, Barone chose Cerro Negro as the test site because its lava fields and black sands provided an inclined track with few obstacles.
Video of the sensational crash was broadcast worldwide this week and several newspapers ran photos of Barone tumbling down the mountain.
Barone began setting speed records in 1994. Along with the mountain-bike speed record on land, he also holds the record on snow at 138 mph, which he set two years ago ridding a specially designed streamlined Sunn bike at the French ski resort Les Arcs.
According to his Web site, Barone is spending his spare time as a stunt double for an upcoming French action film Taxi 3.
