The Endangered Species Act

One of the most controversial issues before Congress is revision of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, a landmark environmental law that many expect will be scaled back in the months ahead.

Proponents of the ESA laud it for the successful recovery of threatened species such as the peregrine falcon. Critics say the law places inordinate demands on owners of lands where these recovery plans are carried out, and on those whose jobs are curtailed as a result.
