The Return of the Predator

Rancher tangles with federal agents

In January, following the discovery of a gray wolf shot dead on the property of Idaho rancher Eugene Hussey, two federal wildlife investigators attempted to search Hussey's ranch for the bullet used to kill the protected wolf.

Hussey denied killing the wolf, and angrily refused to let the federal agents onto his property. He later accused them of being heavy-handed and overbearing during this confrontation. His complaints set off an outcry in Congress and the national press against yet another aggressive intrusion of federal law enforcement officials into the lives of innocent private citizens.

But the agents were carrying a tape recorder during their attempt to search the Idaho rancher's property. And now it appears that someone may have been crying wolf.
