While scientists monitor packs of newly reintroduced gray wolves in Wyoming and Idaho, their counterparts in Arizona and New Mexico are fighting political battles to begin a similar program to bring the Mexican wolf back to the border states. Few of these animals remain outside of captivity, and most ranchers in the region feel it should stay that way.
