Adventure Racing: The Gear
by Ted Stedman
Petzl MYO 5
Petzl MYO 5 ($77):
Reliable lighting is a good thing for, say, avoiding cliffs, sharp branches, and other nasties that can do more harm than simply delay you from completing the nocturnal portion of a grueling 24-hour adventure race. A trusted beacon that can blaze the way is the Petzl MYO 5, a searchlight of an LED headlamp that thankfully boasts an extended battery life. Its one-handed operation is a snap. For the closer work, twist the rotating bezel to select between three brightness settings offered by five LEDs, a setup that also helps economize power draw. Where distance is your goal, the blazing Xenon halogen bulb shoots photons up to 100 meters to turn night to day. Four AA alkaline batteries are easily replaced, and you'll know when juice is stretched thin because the MYO automatically switches to reserve power mode to provide close-proximity lighting and extend the remaining burn time for true creatures of the night.
