POWDER SHOTS
Adventure filmmaker Peter "Peru" Chrzanowski is launching his first full winter of one-week extreme filmmaking courses at Fernie Alpine Resort, in British Columbia, December 7-13. (Three more courses will follow in February, at other mountains.) The only such school in the world, it will teach aspiring filmmakers all aspects of action filmmaking. Limited to ten students, the course costs $1,702, which includes lift passes, meals, and accommodations. Contact: 604-468-1213, www.explorex.net

HELP FOR HOT SPOTS
This past September at the World Parks Congress, in Durban, South Africa, Conservation International and the United Nations Environment Program released the most comprehensive study to date mapping global tourism's effect on more than 25 of the planet's "hot spots." The 52-page report highlights countries like Laos and cambodia, where tourism has increased more than 2,000 percent in the last decade. The drastic increase in tourism has contributed to a cumulative loss of 90 percent of the original vegetation in these regions. Eco-minded travelers can find the study at www.conservation.org or call 202-912-1000.
