LASSEN PEAK TRAILWISE SUMMIT: 10,457 feet. TRAIL: about five miles round-trip. Scaling this snowcapped Sierra Nevada volcano in Lassen Volcanic National Park will test your legs and lungs—40 switchbacks lead steadily uphill to the dramatic summit, a gain of 2,000 feet. Climbing season is July to September (or whenever the trail is clear of snow). Kids should be nine or ten.
They can throw snowballs near the top in midsummer and check out hydrothermal features like fumaroles—hissing holes of vapor and hot gases.
