LASSEN PEAK
TRAILWISE
SUMMIT: 10,457 feet.
TRAIL: about five miles round-trip. Scaling this snowcapped Sierra Nevada volcano in Lassen Volcanic National Park will test your legs and lungs—40 switchbacks lead steadily uphill to the dramatic summit, a gain of 2,000 feet. Climbing season is July to September (or whenever the trail is clear of snow). Kids should be nine or ten.
