Question: Walla Walla is a Western small town with a significant ag and timber interests. We are fighting the private rights/"takings" battle on a local and state level. How do we get these guys to realize that protecting the environment is protecting their interests as well?

David Brower: I don't know when you wrote the letter, but as I understand it Washington has voted right on this matter. We should follow the example of Arizona and Washington and remember the public land belongs to the public and we can do better with it if we try.

The individual private owners at this point still think they have the right to do anything they want to with their land. I would argue--and we should argue--they don't have that right. All of us are brief tenants and we should think about who's going to be occupying this piece of earth next and give those people a break.
