The Archdruid Persists
November 29, 1995
Do you think Americans are as anti-environmental as Congress?
How can we reduce the potential damage of the salvage lumber bill?
Would you pay polluters not to pollute?
How do we get these guys to realize it's their environment too?
How do you see the fight for the environment playing out?
I want to be an environmental leader. How should I start?
How can I--a single, working student--assist in the effort?
Do you think Americans are as anti-environmental as Congress?
Question:Given the ugly, mean-spirited, and flagrantly anti-environmental character of the present Congress, and the Republican members especially, do you think this is an actual reflection of the state of mind of the American populace? If so, how did this come about?

David Brower (518K WAV): No, it's the state of mind of Rush Limbaugh. I think he had more influence than he should have had. And I hope they outgrow it--and that includes a lot of people who advertised in yesterday's New York Times saying that he's a good man, but he's not. He's not a bad man, but he's just totally misguided.
Now, I think that what we have to stop doing is being part of the mean-minded movement ourselves--that somehow we love you, but just don't like what you're doing and why don't you try something else? My personal wish, if I had it, would be to get an amendment to the Constitution allowing us to fire members of Congress who act the way these guys are acting, and not have to wait until
another election.
