Tim Cahill

Have you been somewhere where there was nothing notable?
Question: Has there been a trip you've made where the only notable thing was the nearly complete lack of notable things?

Marc Barringer

Tim: Dear Marc,

It happens. There wasn't much going on in Timbuctu, for instance.

Luckily, Outside keeps me on a pretty long leash. If there is nothing going on, I can change the concept of the story or go someplace nearby where something is actually happening.

Usually, however, you can find something interesting going on. That's part of my job. I'd compare this to, oh, say, going down to the local senior center and chatting with folks. On the surface, it can be god-awful boring. But spend a few days. Get to know people. All of a sudden you have a collection of fantastic stories.

So it is with travel locales.
