The Tortured Soul of Marc Twight
Climbing's prince of angst answers your questions
Among the hard men of Chamonix--the French valley where Marc Twight realized his natural talent for climbing ruthless ice--he is known as the "king of pain." His tortured poetry boasts starkly of "a soul full of rats."

For Marc Twight, climbing is pain and pain is life. And writing about it is a necessity. After reading his first article--about a grueling attempt on the Himalayan peak Nuptse--Marc's parents tried to have him committed.

His accomplishments on ice include a first ascent of "The Reality Bath," a Grade 7 frozen waterfall believed by many to be the most difficult in the world. He also climbed "Slipstream," a 3,000-foot frozen waterfall in the Canadian Rockies, in two hours--a feat most accomplish in 24.
