1996 National Cyclocross Championships

Mud, sweat, and gears
On December 7 the country's best cyclocross racers hit the ground running on a muddy, challenging course outside Seattle. Race day proved who is best at negotiating the steep run-ups, multiple barriers, and tricky singletrack. Both the men's and women's defending champions made it to the podium but gave up their championship jerseys.

Race report
Champions unseated in Northwest weather
The defending champions made it to the podium, but not the top step. Shari Kain took back the stars-and-stripes jersey from Jan Bolland, while a pair of Saturn road racing brothers dominated the men's contest.

The former roadie who finished this year's mountain bike national championship series with a second-place blowout at Mammoth, California, is known for her consistently strong riding style. Check out what she had to say about cyclocross, training, and her love of mud.

Outside Online's 1995 coverage
Last year's championship race brought a bit of controversy to the sport when Jan Bolland won the contest using her mountain bike. That choice made all the difference in the snowstorm that smothered Leicester, Massachusetts.
