What do you do for cross-training? Do you lift weights?
Question: Jan, what do you do for cross-training? How much weight training do you do during competition and off-season? Do you ever feel stale, and what do you do to overcome it? Many thanks.

Wally

Jan: My cross-training consists of running, skiing, swimming, lifting, and pretty much anything that gets me moving! I always lift from November through the end of March. I go through phases when I lift, starting with circuit training using low weights with high reps to make the transition to lifting. I will gradually work into doing a couple days of heavier lifting to develop strength, in conjunction with one day per week of circuit training as a way to supplement my aerobic training. In the past, I did lift once a week, usually Monday or Tuesday, as an easy day. I felt this helped to maintain supportive tissue strength, as well as aid my recovery.

Yes, there are times when I feel stale. That seems to be after a long time of traveling and racing every weekend, or following a very hard training block. If I am stale from too much travel and racing I will take a weekend off from racing, rest, and then do an intensive week of training to focus on quality training. If I am stale from a block of hard training I make myself take a day or two away from the bike and do something fun other than riding my bike. I come back with a refreshed mind and attitude.
