1996 Honolulu Marathon

Plodding through paradise

Runners from around the world descended on Oahu December 8
for the world's largest marathon. Recent storms and cooler
temperatures in Honolulu set the stage for shockingly fast times for both the men's and women's contests--but no broken records.

Event coverage
Like a cool breeze
Eric Kamaiyo of Kenya took off after a hot surge to win the men's marathon, learning a bit of patience along the way. On one of the most weather-perfect days in the race's history, both he and women's winner Ramila Burangulova of Russia fell just short of breaking course records.

Eric Kamaiyo of Kenya and Ramila Burangulova of Russia won this year's Honolulu Marathon in one of the event's most exciting days in recent memory. Follow the live progress of December 8 from correspondent Timothy Carlson.

Event coverage
Waikiki Mile a dramatic step for Decker-Slaney
A favorite and a long-shot won Saturday's Waikiki Mile, but one of the most impressive performances of the day was put fourth by longtime great Mary Decker-Slaney, back in racing after three years of recovery.

Race preview
Honolulu a course for future stars
Race-watchers call Honolulu "the breeding ground of champions," and they have the record to back it up. With its relatively low entrance fees and prize purses, the world's largest marathon has long been a proving ground for future Olympic, Boston, and New York champions.
