Leadville 100 Run and Mountain Bike Race

Your questions answered by ultrarunner Joe Schlereth
I am always looking for a way to get food and fluids during long runs. What do you eat/drink during races? Do you have a favorite liquid food? Thanks.
Jim Berryman-Shafer

As far as eating, I go with PowerBars the way a lot of people do. That's about the only solid food I eat, that and Saltines and occasionally some chocolate. My favorite liquid is Exceed fluid replacement.
What do you do for sodium supplement to keep from cramping? Being forty-five myself, do you feel the pressure (drive) to continue to perform at the levels you have in the past? I always enjoy seeing your finish results knowing your age and the competition. Keep up the level of effort. You are an inspiration to those of us who are long time middle-of-the-packers. Don't get fat.

Believe it or not I just take table salt. I have a salt shaker I carry in my fanny pack. Do I feel pressure? Somewhat, but I just try to do the best I can. It's not external pressure, it's more internal drive.
Hello Joe, I've raced up to 35 miles comfortably without doing training runs any longer than a marathon. How long should the training 'long runs' be for the 100 milers ? Thanks.
Douglas Kretzmann
My longest training runs are usually 50 to 55 miles. I usually don't go much more than that except by design, if I get lost or something. Generally it's about half the distance of the race.
What type of training schedule (cross training?) does one go through in preparing for this type of race?
Lisa Kocsis
I don't do any cross-training to speak of. I don't really have the time. I'd like to try it sometime. When you're doing 160 to 180 miles a week, you don't really have much time for cross-training.
What is your typical heart rate while running the Leadville 100? At what percent of your maximum heart rate do you run the race? Do you have to breathe hard the whole race or are you in such good shape that you only need to breathe through your nose? Good luck!
Randy Sheppeard
I don't wear a heart monitor so I don't know, but I know it's way high. Do I have to breathe hard the whole race? No, on the downhills and when I'm walking I can relax. Generally I'm trying not to run too hard. I'm trying to run comfortably. Some of the time I can breathe through my nose, but when you're running that much you're getting air any way you can.
How do you continue to do the training mileage you are famous for? I run a maximum of 70 a week. Any more than that and I break down physically and mentally. When do you get rest and might you not run better with more rest and less mileage? Good luck next Saturday.
Gene Thibeault
It's hard at times to do the training mileage, but you set your goals and you try to achieve them. So far most of the injuries I've had I've been able to push through. So far they haven't been too serious, knock on wood. A lot of people have told me that as far as resting more. I try to get enough rest. I don't have a life much out of work and running. I suppose if I do poorly I'm going to try a different strategy. As long as I'm getting good results I'm a little reluctant to try something else. Mentally sometimes it's very hard. For example today it's 110 degrees, and being out there running is the last thing I want to do. The other night it was 112 and just to go do 10 to 12 miles was really tough.
