1996 Kayaking the Victoria Nile

An Introduction
From the silver screen to whitewater
When Rod Johnson saw The African Queen, he knew those were the rapids for him. Johnson and fellow kayaker Steve Gougeon are now paddling down that river on the trip of a lifetime, attempting what is thought to be a first-ever descent of the Nile's first 300 miles.

February 18: What's an expedition without a little guerilla warfare?
February 15: Paddling to Lake Albert, and th-th-that's all folks!
February 13: Rod nearly becomes dinner for a Nile croc
February 12: What a long, hard day it was for Joe
February 10-11: The river starts to look like a lake
February 7: Getting the itch to paddle again
February 6: A warning about crocodiles, and a change of plans
February 2-3: Making plans to cross Lake Kyoga
February 2: Sorry, sir, was this your house?
February 1: Monkeys, odd rocks, and some show-and-tell
January 31: Enough recuperating--back to the rapids
January 27: A trip to the doctor's office
January 25-26: Making new friends as Steve gets some rest
January 23-24: A third team member arrives
January 21: Steve and shoeless Rod take a beating
January 20: Yeeeha! The boaters shoot their first rapids.
January 19: A first glimpse of the Nile
January 17-18: We're not in Minnesota anymore
