Doing the Atlanta scramble
DeAnne Hemmens

July 6
This week has been crazy, busy. We travelled on Monday to Atlanta and spent two days processing. This includes all of the outfitting for the opening ceremonies and all the gear from various sponsors. It was lots of fun but very exhausting at the same time.
We had a great afternoon at the Coca Cola venue near the village. It's an interactive sports arena and has lots to see. The next day we travelled to Gainesville where we will stay until July July 17 when the Olympic village opens.
Gainesville is the home of chicken and that's all we eat. The food here is terrible, all fried and unhealthy. It's very frustrating to be in your own country and still, awful food.
We are training in a different area of Lake Lanier at the Chatahocee Country Club. They are kind enough to let us keep our boats there.
We had a nice barbecue on the Fourth of July (not chicken!). And a fun evening with lots of interesting people. Everyone here is very excited about the games and the excitement carries over to me.
Workouts have been strange: no course to practice on yet, the time change, new surroundings, etc. So I am glad that Sunday is here. I am very tired and need a day to rest. Next week we will start out lactate tolerance work (short and fast work with very little rest). Pretty grueling. In 23 days we race. Wow!! Can't believe it.
