World champion Martinello strikes gold
World champion Silvio Martinello gave Italy their second cycling gold medal when he won the 40-kilometer points race on Sunday.

He added the Olympic crown to the world points title he won in Bogota last year, finishing eight points clear of Canadian Brian Walton.

Australian Stuart O'Grady gained his second bronze. He finished third in the team pursuit 24 hours earlier.

After 54 of the 160 laps on the 250-meter wooden bowl, Martinello and five other riders lapped the field.

Walton was not among the leading six but a huge drive brought him back. He racked up maximum points in the final sprint, which took him from fourth to the silver-medal position.
