Canada disqualified from Star heat after finishing first
The Olympic yachting jury on Tuesday upheld a U.S. protest and disqualified Canada, the provisional winners, from the first heat of the Star class event.

Canadians Ross MacDonald and Eric Jespersen were first across the line on Monday but fourth-placed Americans Mark Reynolds and Hal Haenel, the defending champions, immediately protested.

The jury decided the Canadians had infringed rule 42 which says a yacht passing on the outside while rounding a marker must be given adequate room.

Another Star class protest by seventh-placed Greece against fifth finisher Sweden was dismissed.

With Canada's disqualification, the amended provisional result from the first of the 11 Star heats gave Brazil victory with New Zealand second and the United States third.

There was also a rash of protests after Monday's Soling race, won by the United States before a storm wiped out 13 of the 16 scheduled heats. Four Soling crews were disqualified--Hungary (13th across the line), New Zealand (14th), Ukraine (16th) and Brazil (19th).
