1997 Raid Gauloises

Team Kelty-Cabela race diary--January 21
Don Mann, team captain
Together with Nick, Allan, John, Joy, Parker, Harry, and George, I flew from Norfolk to Detroit to Amsterdam to Johannesburg, arriving on 16 January. In Amsterdam, all of us except for George and Parker visited the famous coffee houses and the red-light district.

Once in Jo’burg, we found that Don’s bike box had been badly damaged and a large bag broken into. The tents had been destroyed and gear stolen. Joy and Mike repaired the tents in the hallway of the Holiday Inn where we’re staying (we have three rooms between the 10 of us). Allan and Nick prepared the maps and altimeter. George traveled around the city buying more maps. Parker has been sorting out accommodation and rental cars. Joy bought all the food and figured out and packed 6,000 well-balanced calories per day for each team member. We were all very excited to meet Angelika, who arrived on 17 January.
