1997 Raid Gauloises

Team Kelty-Cabela race diary--February 1
Joy Marr, team coordinator
The team came in last night to the checkpoint. They were out for quite awhile but caught up and passed four other teams! Nick Spaeder's feet are really sore and he had really slowed the team down. I know he felt very bad but he said he had nothing left when he came into camp last night. This morning he was a new man. Parker Cross, the team doctor, spent a lot of time with him and he was up and ready to run the river this morning.

Alan Holmes is in great shape and his attitude has been upbeat since the beginning. John Kinder also is going strong, with feet and body in good shape. Team captain Don Mann is still trying to finish in the top 10, so he has been somewhat frustrated with the turn of events. Anjelika took a fall in the mountaineering section, and is taking it easy on her knee.

This morning we got up at 4 a.m. and packed, watered, and fed the team. They will have a 20-mile river section, then a two- to three-hour hike with all the gear (except the raft). Then they'll get back on the river and finish the day with a Tyrolean rope crossing from one side of the river to the other. After that they'll have another hike into camp.

If they can do this all before 7 p.m. tonight, they will really be back in the thick of it. The team has been lost in the fog, but other than that, they have been quite lucky in their navigation.
