1997 Raid Gauloises

Team Kelty-Cabela member profiles

Team Kelty-Cabela
Don Mann, team captain
Don Mann was captain of a 1995 Raid team that completed the race. He has competed in triathlons and ultramarathons nationally and internationally for many years, including two Fromman competitions. He comes to the team with extensive leadership skills and a strong background in an array of outdoor pursuits, including mountain biking, road cycling, and scuba diving, along with a career as a Navy SEAL officer.

Alan Holmes
Alan has specialized in NCAA running and cycling. His cycling background includes road and mountain bike racing. Alan is an accomplished triathlete and pursues sky diving, scuba diving, and skiing, along with his career as an Army Special Forces officer.

Anjelika Castaneda
Angelika was an invaluable asset to the 1994 all-women's Raid Gauloises team as team captain and chief navigator. Bringing home first place in the Extreme Games in 1996 and second place in 1995, and seventh in the Eco-Challenge, her lifelong experience in ultrarunning has allowed her to complete more than 45 50-mile runs, three 150-mile runs, and a solo run across the Sahara Desert. Her experience in national and international events will be an integral part of Team Kelty-Cabela.

Nick Spaeder
Nick brings a variety of outdoor skills and athletic experience to Team Kelty-Cabela. He has been cycling and ultracycling for more than 10 years, including ultramarathons, ultracycling, and a self-supported 4,000-mile mountain bike expedition. His experience in such events as well as his military SEAL training and love of outdoor sports has led to his participation in this year's Raid Gauloises.

John Kainer
John, another Navy SEAL officer, is a veteran of numerous triathlons. His experience as a ultramarathon runner has seen him compete nationally and internationally. His many years of outdoor pursuits include skydiving, scuba diving, climbing, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, backpacking, and skiing.

Support team
Team manager Mike Nola has the huge chore of managing mountains of papers--newsletters, notes, substitutions, additions, and deletions, etc. Doing such business via phone, fax, and e-mail across two or more countries has provided some great character-building to go along with his Ironman, triathlete, and personal trainer abilities.

Parker Cross, the other team assistant, has proven his usefulness, not only in the obvious ways as team medic--getting malaria pills, first-aid supplies, and the like--but as the only team support member who has a wealth of medical knowledge.

George Darden is a detail man with a great many contacts in the States and South Africa. He has made the way clearer for the team, enabling them to be better informed, which is key in competing at this level.

Harry Gerwein is the team photographer who documents all the behind-the-scenes activities. He worked prior to the trip, catching shots of training sessions, preparations, and packing.

Joy Marr rounds out the support team, filling in as team logistics manager, nutritionist, technical advisor, and general coordinator.
