1997 Marathon des Sables

April 4: Getting to the race
After 16-plus hours from JFK to Marrakech, we traveled by bus for five hours from sea level to 2,700 meters to pass over the inhospitable but beautiful Atlas Mountains, and down into Ouarzazate.

Any thoughts of sleeping after the long airplane ride were immediately replaced by the horrifying sight of 500-meter dropoffs as our 70-year-old driver threw himself into each treacherous turn with the vigor and skill level of a teenager.

This represented an interesting contrast with, but equally horrifying experience to our taxi ride in New York City.
