1996 Vuelta a España

Monday, September 9: Live updates from Stage 3
VALENCIA, Spain

Rossato was not among the 176 riders departing Cuenca this morning, knocked from the Vuelta by a nasty crash at the end of yesterday's stage.

In the first hour of action, the ONCE and Banesto squads forced the pace, clearly setting the peloton for a contest between Laurent Jalabert and Miguel Indurain.

Víctor M. Gamito (POR), on the MX-ONDA team retired from the race, hindered by injuries from a crash.

At kilometer 35, Jalabert, Indurain, and Fabio Baldato led off the front in a break that soon built to more than one minute. Over the next 70 kilometers, Indurain and Jalabert extended their lead to 1:46. Between kilometer 100 and kilometer 155, the Indurain-Jalabert duo boosted their pace to gain an overall lead of nearly five minutes over the peloton. The final 15 kilometers of the race are relatively flat, offering little chance for the pursuers attempting to reel these dangerous riders back into the pack.

3:51 p.m. (local time): With less than 20 kilometers to go in the 162-kilometer stage, a lead group of Miguel Indurain and Laurent Jalabert have a three-minute lead over race leader Conte. Looks like there will be a new overall leader by the end of the stage.

4:17 p.m. (local time): French rider Laurent Jalabert crosses the finish line first, winning the third stage of the Vuelta.
