Sunday, September 29: Live updates from Stage 22
MADRID, Spain

3:23 p.m. (local time):
A total of 115 riders started today's stage in Madrid. They went out into suburbs and will loop back through the city.

The peloton is riding together kindo of slow, covering 34 kilometers in the first hour and reaching the 68-kilometer mark at the second hour.

Now they're at the 80-kilometer mark with about 30 kilometers left until they get back into Madrid. There they will do eight laps on the street through the city.

They'll be in the city in about an hour.

4:12 p.m. (local time):
The peloton is in Madrid now and the riders have finished two of the eight laps they will do through the city streets.

There are two riders out front, Vicente Aparico (Banesto) and Angelo Canzonieri (Saeco). They are 56 seconds ahead of the main group of riders.

The rest of the peloton is still together.

4:33 p.m. (local time):
The breakaway riders have been caught. The peloton is riding together and has two laps to go.

4:39 p.m. (local time):
The peloton is on its last lap through the streets of Madrid. MG is setting up its riders for the sprint. Nicola Minali (Gewiss-Playbus) has said he will try to win today's stage and is gearing up. Mapei and Scrigno are also getting their riders in position. Laurent Jalabert also is toward the front of the pack.

4:46 p.m. (local time):
Tom Steels (Mapei) won today's stage, his second for the Vuelta. He blocked out Minali, who finished second.

Jeroen Blijlevens (TVM) was third, and Laurent Jalabert (ONCE) was fourth.

Alex Zulle (ONCE) has just won his first major stage race and looks very pleased being mobbed by the press.
