Review: Fresh Loot
Waste Not
Recycled, salvaged, and renewable gear that doesn't sacrifice performance

By Megan Michelson

Green Gear
(Jens Mortensen)

1. TRAVEL
The silky-soft Modal fabric in Horny Toad's Felix shirt, created by spinning cellulose from sustainably harvested beech trees, wicks sweat better than a cotton button-down. $70; hornytoad.com

2. RIDE
Cannondale's LE Carbon Jersey is made using organic carbon particles collected from coconut shells. It traps odor so efficiently, you can skip a load of laundry. $150; cannondale.com

3. RUN
The fabric recipe for GoLite's ultra-wicking Drimove S/S Top: Take activated carbon particles from coconut shells (a by-product of the water-purification industry), then blend with 100 percent recycled polyster. Daiquiri not included. $30; golite.com

4. CARRY
Lafuma's Eco 40 is a traditional backpack in most respects—it has a ventilated back panel, organizing pockets, and a built-in rain cover—but the PVC-free construction, made possible by using hemp and recycled plastic, is all new. $100; lafuma.com

5. LAYER
Patagonia's Capilene 3 Zip-Neck is made with 64 percent recycled polyester. The flat, strategically placed seams won't chafe under a pack's straps. $50; patagonia.com

6. PLAY
Nike has nearly eliminated the use of toxic chemical solvents in shoes like the Considered Humara, made with hemp laces and an earth-friendly polyester-cork footbed. $90; nike.com

7. WALK
Everything from the laces to the outsole comes from recycled material in Timberland's Greenscapes Mountain Sneaker. The company pledges to go completely carbon neutral by 2010. $85; timberland.com

8. SURF
Planet Earth's Sprout Boardshorts are made with pesticide-free hemp and recycled plastic. $64; planetearthgreenlabel.com
