I'm going surfing in Hawaii. Can you recommend a bikini that will stay on?
The Editors
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Since I live at 7,000 feet and about 1,000 miles from the closest ocean, I checked in with Megan Abudo, transplanted Hawaiian, pro surfer, and Roxy team rider: "Theres nothing better for an active surf session than a functional suit that looks good and doesnt fall off," she told me. "I love the Roxy Cosmic Bloom Criss-Cross halter ($40) because it doesnt hinder your performance in the water. I wear it with the Widewinder bottom ($36) because I prefer a wider cut with ties on the side."

Do you have a question of your own?

Abudo's new teammate Rachel Evan Spears, also surfs with Criss-Cross halter, but prefers the String Bottom ($38). Surfing demands a lot out of a suit, she says. "It has to stay in place while thousands of pounds of pressure come down on it."
If a string bikini is too itsy bitsy, try Athleta's Surfboarder Tankini (athleta.com). The tie halter ($59) has a "meet-and-greet" style that covers your belly and comes with a bottom ($44) that's flattering, but not quite a bikini.
Or go back to the Gidget era with Carve Designs' Tamarindo Tie Back Top ($35), which has an especially flattering cut for smaller-chested women, and the Belted Bottom ($35), with a retro, removable belt.
Stephanie Pearson: The Gear Girl
When it comes to gear, contributing editor Stephanie Pearson lives by one rule: What you own, owns you. That's why the skier, hiker, biker, runner, canoe paddler, and sometimes yogini is on an eternal quest to find gear and clothing that will enhance her life rather than make her a slave to dysfunctional stuff. During her seven-year stint as a travel editor at Outside, Pearson received three honorable mentions in The Best American Travel Writing series for stories on Guatemala, New Zealand, and Bhutan. Now that she's no longer in the office at Outside HQ in Santa Fe, Pearson hopes to be on the road more and is always in search of functional and aesthetically pleasing gear that's easy to use or clothing that's elegant to wear. Pearson is based in northern Minnesota and Santa Fe. Her latest adventure was on the fringe of the Amazon Basin in Brazil.
