Yakima Platinum Pro

Gear Category: Car Racks

$550
Yakima Platinum Pro - Sport Racks: Reveiws
Kim Kurian
Gotta head out fast? This quick-release weekend escape pod is a cinch to throw on.

Why It's Cool: The sleek new Platinum Pro holds up to 21 cubic feet of gear and opens from either side, but here's the important part: I got this sucker out of the box and locked on the roof in less than two minutes, all by my lonesome. » The arched feet grab on to all manner of roof-rack systems, so there's no need to switch teams just to use this box. (I attached it to a Thule bar.) » It's also sweet on the security front: A lever handle—not your key—engages the three-point locking system, a stable setup that not only foils crooks but also puts less strain on the key. That is, you won't break it off in the lock trying to get your box open.

Hmmm . . . If you open one side without fully closing the other, you can pop the entire lid off, necessitating a tap back into place with a rubber mallet.
