Paradise Rescued
If saving the fragile ecosystem of a tropical island sounds both hedonistic and noble, check out a new trip to Moorea, in French Polynesia, run by the University Research Expeditions Program. Participants will help fight the invasion of the nonnative miconia plant and collect data on the endangered Tahitian petrel. The first of three 12-day trips starts January 7; land cost is
$1,475. Call 510-642-6586.
Perks on Snow
Starting the day after New Year's, novice skiers and snowboarders will ride gratis on the K and L beginner chairlifts at Colorado's Copper Mountain Resort. Pick up free lift tickets at the Skier Services Center and then practice away on 51 acres of wide, gentle slopes. The offer stands through the end of the season except for 19 blackout days. Call 800-458-8386.
Lonely No More
After 22 years of publishing more than 175 guides to far-flung locales from China to West Africa, Lonely Planet has finally focused on the Lower 48. The first guides to hit the stores this winter will be Pacific Northwest ($19.95), Rocky Mountain States ($21.95), and Southwest, USA ($19.95).
Check your local bookstore or call 800-275-8555.
