The Route: Who knew there was an inland Fiji? A weeklong journey into this diving Valhalla's tropical heart — rafting the Class III-IV Navau River and floating via inflatable kayak down the waterfall-spangled Class II Luva.

When to go: Year-round

Difficulty: Moderate

Travel advisory: To catch the flow at its highest, go during the rainy season of September through March. And consider customizing your trip: the outfitters can fit in as much beach camping, sea-kayaking, and snorkeling as you like.

High/low points:

  • Getting doused by falls in Navua Gorge, where 100-foot black volcanic walls rim a narrow seven-mile-long ribbon of water.
  • Underestimating the inebriating effects of kava, the local brew made from the roots of a native shrub.
