Oops, Missed a Spot

News that surveyors have been inaccurately marking the South Pole for years came as a surprise, even to Gordon Shupe of the U.S. Geological Survey, who concedes that the Survey's recent adoption of global positioning system technology has yielded a more precise placement of the Pole marker. Does this mean a new wave of Norwegian explorers will flood Antarctica in hopes of being first to reach the real South Pole, 18 inches from the old one? "Doubtful," deadpans Shupe. "Whoever made it that far before probably tromped all around the Pole to make sure they hit it."
