Stargazing
By David N. Schramm

October is the month of space exploration: It has seen the founding of NASA (1958), the launch of Sputnik I (1957), the first rocket to reach outer space (1942), and the birth of propulsion pioneer Robert Goddard (1882). This month's full Moon, call the Hunter's Moon, will occur on the eighth, and penumbral lunar eclipse in that date will be visible in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
The Orionid meteor shower can be seen for five nights ending in the 24th, which will also be the date of the new Moon and a total solar eclipse visible across much of Asia and the Pacific. On the 27th, Jupiter, Mars, and Venus will fall into line to the lower right of the Moon.
