A Half-Century of Unbridled Terror

Hark back to the wooden-plank olden days during the 50th anniversary celebration at Mad River Glen, Vermont's blissfully backward expert mecca. Lifts, including the original Old Faithful single-chair, crank up on December 11, but festivities last all season. Don't miss January 26, when retro-clad skiers pay 1948 prices — just $3.50 per ticket. Call 802-496-3551 for a complete list of events.

Hawaii 5-0-0
Palm trees adorn the port view and the Moka Mountains loom to starboard as rowers skim through Waikiki's protected Ala Wai Canal during 500- and 1,000-meter sprints at the Royal Hawaiian Rowing Challenge. Entrance fee for the December 29-January 3 gathering is $100. Boats are provided, but oars, teammates, and coxbox are BYO. Call 808-923-0157.

A Schuss with Fame
Go head-to-head, if you dare, with retired World Cup racers during the season opener of the Far West Masters 1999 alpine racing series at Mammoth Mountain on December 12 and 13. Skiers are matched strictly by age group in slalom and GS events. Fee is $16 per race, plus an additional $10 for those without a USSA racing license. Call 760-934-0642.
