EVERESTPALOOZA>> What's the best way to celebrate Mount Everest's golden jubilee? With bowling, of course! Over the next year, Nepal will honor the 1953 conquest of the Big E with a marathon, a mountain-bike race, and a kegling tournament in Kathmandu. This May, Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay, the sons of the first Everest summiteers, will reach Base Camp after a leisurely trek with Brent Bishop, son of Barry Bishop, a member of the first successful American climb. Hillary and Bishop will then join Everest vet Peter Athans for a summit bid. TINSELTOWN ED>> Eddie "the Eagle" Edwards, the British ski jumper whose bumbling flights in the 1988 Calgary Olympics made him an underdog hero, has sold his story to LA's Saville Productions. Ever bold, Edwards, 38, is suggesting Brad Pitt for the starring role. KID GLOVES>> This month, an American-Bolivian expedition led by guide Paul Johnson will lug GPS equipment up Mount Ancohuma in Bolivia to determine whether the peak, now measured at 21,489 feet, is taller than 22,834-foot Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. Twelve of 22 team members are under 20, so it's a superachieving-teen thing to boot. BUISNESS FLUKE>> After donating millions of dollars to the cause of freeing Keiko the killer whale, telecom magnate Craig McCaw is reducing funding for the Free Willy star (see "Jonah Is the Whale," August 2001). Without money to pay for the helicopter and equipment to help him find a pod, the big guy's chances of a speedy return to the ocean may be much slimmer.
