Ear to the Ground

HAT HAIR>> GLEN PLAKE, 37, the flamboyant ski punk known for his 15-inch mohawk, has signed up to endorse—who woulda' thought—ski caps. "I usually need a Cat-in-the-Hat-lookin' thing," says Plake, who will lay off the mousse so he can cram his coif into a Seattle-based line called Screamer Hats. "They'll probably have to make me a couple custom ones."

TWO TIMES SEVEN>> In early July, 33-year-old ELLIOTT BOSTON III (see "Go Tell It on the Mountain," February 2001) and Stephen Shobe, 46, will press on with their quest to become the first African-Americans to complete the seven summits by tackling Australia's 7,310-foot Kosciusko.
PRIMAL TIME>> On July 7, the Primal Quest Adventure Race, bankrolled by Seagate Technology president BILL WATKINS, 49, and CEO STEVE LUCZO, 45, begins in Telluride, Colorado. Designed to compete with the Eco-Challenge's marquee status, the race comes with an unprecedented $100,000 first-place purse, a spectator-friendly stadium, and an advisory board that includes the world's top racers, IAN ADAMSON and CATHY SASSIN.

2001 ASP World Surfing Champion
"In July I'm heading to South Africa for a World Qualifying Series event in Durban and a World Tour contest in Jeffreys Bay. I also hope to spend some time relaxing at home in Florida. I'll do as much fishing as possible—mostly for redfish on the Indian River flats."
