Outside Magazine

Outside Magazine's Internship Programs

EDITORIAL
Outside magazine is accepting applications for six-month editorial internships that are available throughout the year. Outside's interns attend editorial meetings, work closely with top editors, and gain hands-on experience at an award-winning magazine. Former Outside interns have gone on to edit or write at such magazines as Mother Jones, the New York Observer, New York Times Magazine, Metropolis, Harper's...and of course Outside itself.

The work is full-time and a small stipend is offered. Typical duration of the internship is six months, but some flexibility with schedules can be accommodated. Location is our editorial office in Santa Fe.

Duties include fact-checking, reporting, research, proofreading, and assorted support chores for the editorial department. Outside's editorial interns also help create the news briefs that are posted on Outside Online. Interns occasionally have the opportunity to write short pieces for the magazine.

We've found that the best candidates have had some journalism experience before applying, such as a job at a newspaper or magazine, prior internships in print media, a graduate degree in journalism, or significant college writing experience. But we encourage all college graduates with a serious professional interest in magazine journalism-and a desire to learn and work hard-to apply. We do consider active college and graduate students but cannot guarantee that our scheduling needs will align with academic calendars.

To apply, mail or e-mail a letter (noting any significant freelance writing experience or journalism experience), and resume to the attention of Ryan Krogh (see details below). Responses may take four to six weeks. The most promising candidates will be contacted by phone, and will be asked to complete a proofreading test and critique an Outside issue before the final decision is made. Applications should be made at least 4 months prior to the desired start date.

ART
Outside magazine is accepting applications for spring/summer design internships. The intern will work closely with the design staff and gain hands-on experience at an award-winning magazine.

Typically, our internships are three to four months long, depending on the circumstances. It is a full-time internship with a stipend, and we prefer candidates with prior magazine design experience or a definite passion for magazine design with some design experience. Duties include assisting the design team in the production of three monthly issues with additional responsibilities as your skills develop. Candidates should be proficient in Quark and Photoshop (knowledge of QPS and Illustrator is a plus).

The location of the internship is at our editorial office in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We do consider active college and graduate students but cannot guarantee that our scheduling needs will align with academic calendars.

To apply, please send a resume/cover letter along with 5-10 clips to:

ONLINE
Outside magazine is accepting applications for fulltime online internships available throughout the year. Outside's interns attend editorial meetings, work closely with top editors, and gain hands-on experience publishing an online edition that supplements the print publication.

The work is full-time and a small stipend is offered. Typical duration of the internship is six months, but some flexibility with schedules can be accommodated. Location is our editorial office in Santa Fe.

Duties include preparing the print edition for online publication, image acquisition and image management, copyediting, fact-checking, research, and opportunities to write content for the website. The intern will also take part in edit meetings, pitch story ideas, and assist in the development of new features for outsideonline.com.

We've found that the best candidates have had some journalism experience before applying, such as a job at a newspaper or magazine, prior internships in print media, a graduate degree in journalism, or significant college writing experience. But we encourage all college graduates with a serious professional interest in online journalism-and a desire to learn and work hard-to apply. We do consider active college and graduate students but cannot guarantee that our scheduling needs will align with academic calendars. The internship can be used for college credit if your university allows it.

To apply, mail or e-mail a letter (noting any significant freelance writing experience, HTML or Web experience, Photoshop skills, or journalism experience), and resume to the attention of Joe Spring (see details below). Responses may take four to six weeks. The most promising candidates will be contacted by phone. Applications should be made at least 4 months prior to the desired start date.
