OUTSIDE MAGAZINE NOMINATED FOR TWO NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS

Santa Fe, NM, March 17, 2004— Outside earned two 2004 National Magazine Award nominations, which were announced today by the American Society of Magazine Editors. Outside has been chosen as a finalist in the categories of Leisure Interests and Photo Portfolio/Photo Essay, a new category. The finalists were chosen from among 1,393 entries by a panel of 190 judges.

* Nominated for Leisure Interests is "The 25 Essential Books for the Well-Read Explorer," from Outside's January 2003 issue. The list was developed by Outside correspondent Brad Wieners and the editors at Outside, and was devoted to books that seize the imagination and celebrate the best of adventure, extreme sports, and travel.

* Nominated for Photo Portfolio/Photo Essay is "Tigers of the Snow: Three Generations of Great Climbing Sherpas," with photographs by Martin Schoeller, the remarkable April 2003 portrait gallery of these indispensable expedition partners and living legends.

The American Society of Magazine Editors, 38th annual National Magazine Awards will be presented at a luncheon in the grand ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria, in New York City, on May 5, 2004. In its history, Outside has received 33 ASME nominations and is the only magazine to receive three consecutive National Magazine Awards for general excellence.

Hal Espen is the editor of Outside, Hannah McCaughey is the creative director, and Rob Haggart is the photography editor.
