Rafting trips for Boy Scouts
Question: My Boy Scout venture patrol is looking into going whitewater rafting in mid-July. We are looking at the Nantahala, the Chattooga, and the Ocoee. I have the name of some outfitters on the Nantahala; could you please give me the name of some outfitters on the Chatooga and Ocoee? Please give me a way to contact them. Thank you.

Adventure Adviser: Hopefully, your venture patrol is made up of venturers older than 10 because many outfitters have a minimum age limit of 10; not such a bad idea, considering some of the water you're planning to paddle is roiling Class V rapids. For example, Section 4 of the Chattooga is the stuff rafting horror movies are made of. But it is a national wild and scenic river and you will find dramatic mountain scenery and milder rapids farther upstream. Nantahala Outdoor Center (800-232-7238) and Wildwater Limited (800-451-9972) offer day trips on the Chattooga for approximately $60.

On the Ocoee, the State of Tennessee has imposed a 12-year-old age minimum with good reason. It features class IV rapids with names like Grumpy, Broken Nose, Table Saw, and last but not least, Hell Hole. Adventures Unlimited (800-662-0667) offers a substantial discount to Scout troops at $22.50 per person. The company also has a 12-acre base camp where you can pitch a tent.
