Expedition report from Fischer's Everest base camp -- Friday, May 10
Scott Fischer's team just summitted, Friday at 2:30 p.m. local time (5:30 a.m. Eastern time). [Editor's note: See the complete report on the day's Everest news.] All of Scott's climbers made it: Klev Schoening, Sandy Pittman, Lene Gammelgaard, Tim Madsen, Charlotte Fox, Anatoli Boukreev, Martin Adams, and Neal Beidleman. Four of six Sherpas made it, too. Lopsang, Scott's climbing sirdar was the only one who did not use oxygen. Everybody else, including Scott, used oxygen. It was in the best interest of the team to use oxygen to avoid any problems. From Camp III to summit took 31 hours. They left at midnight and summitted the next afternoon, resting at Camp IV for six hours. They really didn't get much rest, actually, but managed to slow down for a while. Apparently the snow was extraordinarily deep. Some of it was waist-deep at the South Col. Some teams were intimidated by the snow depth and turned back. But Scott figured it was all right and went on through. Scott and Klev were not sick, but everybody else had something else going on, health-wise: Khumbu cough, sinus infections, bronchitis. All the rest had something going on with their bodies. The concern now, the focus, is on getting down from the summit safely. A lot of energy has been used getting up and so they are probably all sleeping as best they can at Camp IV. They should be down in base camp in two days. Probably down to Camp II tomorrow and then on down the next day. Scott is really ready for some serious rest. He's been up and down through the Khumbu Icefall so many times that he's lost count. We've also heard that Mal Duff's expedition is at Camp II and will try on the 12th or 13th. Goran Kropp is down at base camp taking in as much food and rest as he can for a try on the 16th. And Henry Todd's group may try on the 11th. We should have more information in the next day. -- Jane Bromet |
