| This is one of the most dangerous segments of the ascent. There are critical safety issues here, as route selection is made and the route is fixed. It's an odd lunar landscape of ice towers, gaping blue crevasses, and sheer glazed pitches. The ice problems differ from year to year--and even from day to day; the ice is moving, slowly, over the lip of the Western Cwm onto steeper slopes. | |
