K2's unclimbed North Ridge

Expedition report from the K2 base camp -- Wednesday, July 17
Bad weather makes for uncertain schedule on K2

On June 22 we arrived in base camp at 4,800 meters. On June 25 we established the advanced base camp at 5,100 meters.

On July 8 we established Camp I at 5,900 meters. It's a very improbable tent site. It's not adequate. On July 10, I fixed rope to Camp II at 6,600 meters and two of our members spent overnight on Camp II on July 12. In terms of the schedule we've had really bad weather here. It's not clear what the schedule looks like in the next couple of weeks.

We are hoping for various small teams to spend overnights at Camp II and fix toward Camp III, which is at 7,500 meters.

In terms of the other particulars, we're running a little short on food and fuel. We're working together fine. At this point, our porters are expected to come for us on August 15. And that puts us back in Islamabad around the end of August.

We do have a Russian team of 19 that recently arrived. They're a first-class outfit. They're using our ropes. There's no problem with that. They actually brought a yak to base camp for food.
