K2's unclimbed North Ridge

Expedition report -- Thursday. August 22
Three Poles summit; Buhler's success uncertain

Fierce weather on K2 has made the team's summit bid more difficult than expected--and complicated communications with the outside world. However, initial reports from sources in Islamabad indicate three Poles summited, including Krzysztof Wielicki, Piotr Pustelnik, and Ryszard Pawlowski. It is rumored Carlos Buhler also summited.

An Italian team, a survey group which lost a climber earlier this season, reportedly sent two members of their team to the summit from the south.

Currently R.D. Caughron, Outside Online's correspondent, is trekking out to Kashgar, China. He is expected to arrive there around August 26 and plans to file a more complete report.
