Ed Viesturs and the 8K quest

Update from Ed Viesturs' Everest base camp
Monday, May 20, at 8:25 p.m. Nepal time

(Editor's note: On Monday we spoke briefly with Ed Viesturs from Camp II as they made final preparations for their summit attempt, now planned for May 23.)

Tomorrow (Tuesday) we plan to go to Camp III. And then the following day, on the 22nd, work up to Camp IV and hopefully summit on the 23rd.

In general the weather has not changed. It's still very windy. The forecast is for the wind to die a little bit maybe tomorrow, but not by much. We'll go up tomorrow and hopefully get a bit of a break.

The only other team that may accompany us up is Todd Burleson's team, but they have only four climbers. Not a big group. If the weather is not good tomorrow, they will call it quits.

If anything, we are going to be extra cautious and more conservative than before. But we feel our team was conservative to begin with. But I'm sure it (the tragic deaths of eight climbers in a recent storm) took some of the wind out of our sails.

If they (Rob Hall and the other victims) are visible and on our route, we'll try to put them aside and off the main route, somewhere where at least they are out of sight.

The only other thing we've heard is that Anatoli (Boukreev, Scott Fischer's lead climber) went down yesterday and I believe he summitted (Lhotse).
