Update from Ed Viesturs' Everest base camp Thursday, May 23, at 7:35 p.m. Nepal time After successfully reaching the summit of Everest at 11 a.m. Nepal time, Ed Viesturs, David Breashears, and five other climbers returned safely to the South Col. "It was a beautiful, perfect day. It got a little breezy toward their descent but nothing monumental," said base camp staff member Liz Cohen by satellite phone from Nepal. "Ed Viesturs was first up, then David, then three other of our members and five of our Sherpas." The climbers intend to descend from the South Col to Camp II tomorrow. At Camp II they will spend two days getting final footage for Breashears' IMAX film. They are expected to return to base camp Sunday. "They're going to come down from the Col tomorrow--they do have some shooting to do. They're going to be at Camp II for a couple of days," Cohen said. "It was quite difficult to operate the camera at 29,000 feet. But they did get some footage," she said. "Absolutely no complications with mechanics. It's just hard to breathe up there." There is no word yet on whether Ed Viesturs will make a summit attempt on Manaslu, a neighboring peak higher than 8,000 meters. He had intended to make a bid with friends Scott Fischer and Rob Hall, but both men died in the recent Everest storm that killed eight climbers. |
