Denmark: Country Cycling

Keep the glutes firm, work up a sweat, and bond with your kids at the same time on a six-day family biking trip through Denmark organized by Backroads, the leader in worldwide cycling and hiking adventures.

The homeland of Thumbelina and the Little Mermaid combines flat stretches with not-too-challenging rolling hills—perfect cycling terrain for young riders and parents with kids in tow. The tour itself encompasses some of the best of Denmark’s scenery and attractions. Gorgeous ocean views help jumpstart the trip before you wind through quaint seaside towns, stopping to explore small museums and an old Viking ship.

A few days in you’ll pedal past castles and fields of blooming flowers, picnic in a centuries-old fishing village, and watch Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales come to life at a cultural center.

Kids as young as three can be pulled along in a Burley trailer—a three-wheeled cart—while older kids pedal a Piccolo, a third wheel attached to your bike.

Not all of the riding is by bike, however. Youngsters have the opportunity to take horseback riding lessons at a world-class equestrian center. And the entire clan will ride the waves on a ferry trip to the island of Aero.
