New Orleans: Jazzin’ It Up

If memories of New Orleans involve a rugged hangover during Mardi Gras after too many hurricanes, you should know there’s a lot more to this jazzy city than booze and Bourbon Street. Kids can ogle sharks and penguins at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, take in the tigers at the Audubon Zoo, and board a steamboat for a scenic cruise on the Mississippi.

There’s no need to avoid the city’s music scene. The Crescent City rhythms at Preservation Hall, where jazz legends can be heard jamming live, and Mid-City Lanes Rock ‘N’ Bowl—part bowling alley, part bar—all have G-rated entertainment. At Mid-City Lanes expect live zydeco, Cajun, and Rockabilly tunes.

Touring the sights and grooving to the sounds requires a lot fuel. And anyone who’s heard a thing or two about The Big Easy knows that filling up is no problem—even for the kiddies. Have a beignet breakfast at the famous Café Du Monde. For lunch, pick up po boys or muffulettas from Central Grocery Company. Come dinner, head to Coop’s Place for some hearty jambalaya.

Places to Stay:
Royal Sonesta, in the heart of the French Quarter, has a family-friendly reputation and a pool.
