Vancouver: Urban Renewal

Step into the region’s past on Vancouver Island (Weststock)

Here’s a guess: In college you had big plans to visit Vancouver while on a wildly insane road trip to the Pacific Northwest that you never did take.

Well, it’s not too late to appreciate what this drop-dead gorgeous city, surrounded by mountains and inlets of the Pacific Ocean, has to offer.

Chances are, you’ll appreciate it even more now, given its sophisticated vibe and laid-back pace—not to mention that, for an urban environment, Vancouver is really easy on the wallet. That means you don’t have to grimace at your kids when they want to try the salmon—and they should.

There are lots of kid-friendly things to do here: Stroll or bicycle Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre oasis thick with trees and home to the Vancouver Aquarium, here piranha and sharks swim. Peer into microscopes and puzzle out optical illusions at Science World British Columbia. And be sure to take the ferry to Granville Island to check out pottery, stained glass, and other crafts, and to browse the toys at the Kids Market.

Places to Stay:
The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is a well-located, family-friendly property with special B&B packages.
