Liquid off the Throne of Shiva

SLIDE SHOW
(6 photos)

World-class kayaker and filmmaker Scott Lindgren travels to Tibet's sacred, isolated Mt. Kailas, the "Throne of Shiva" in Hindu mythology, for the first descent of the wild, uncharted upper Karnali River. Lindgren and his expedition make the legendary pilgrimage around Kailas, one of the most holy sites in all of Asia, before putting in on the headwaters of the Karnali. After the perilous first descent of the river's upper leg, they continue on the Karnali across entire breadth of Nepal. It is a journey of unsurpassed beauty, from the high thin air of the Himalayas to the thick sweet tropical air of the Nepal/India border. In the Nov. 98 issue, Outside described Lindgren as, "spearheading a campaign by a new generation of cocksure and ferociously talented young boaters to redefine the limits of expedition kayaking."
