JAMES WHITE took a break from his acclaimed studio work—he's shot famous beauties like Scarlett Johansson and Kate Winslet—to photograph Jackson Hole, Wyoming–based climber Sara Carlson for this month's cover of Outside. The sinuous surrounds of California's Joshua Tree National Park served as backdrop. "I was having these Edward Weston moments," says the Los Angeles–based lensman, referring to the 20th-century abstract photographer whose classic black-and-white nudes capture the elemental link between skin and landscape. White used a medium-format camera with a 90mm lens, exposing 320-speed film for 1/125 second at f/5.6.
